Surface hardening of industrial filters by ion nitriding method

Industrial enterprises are required to have an efficient wastewater filtration system for water treatment and water preparation.

At the first stage, mesh-type industrial filters are used for the mechanical purification of water from debris particles.

In the subsequent stages, there is finer and deeper purification of water substances from heavy metals, organic matter, lubricants, and other substances harmful to human health and the environment. Only in a purified and prepared state can the effluents be discharged into designated water bodies.

In the pharmaceutical, chemical, food, and pulp and paper industries, a continuous cycle of operations is carried out, consuming a large amount of water. After water treatment and preparation, the liquid is returned to the production cycle only if it meets the production requirements.

Surface Hardening of Filters

Industrial "grate" filters are made of carbon steel. They can have a round, square, or rectangular shape depending on the installed filtration system. The size of the mesh cells of mechanical grates directly affects the degree of liquid purification from debris fractions.

Filters often operate in abrasive and aggressive environments (salts, acids, alkalis) that gradually deteriorate the material's structure.

An effective way to enhance the protection of filters at the production stage is by applying surface hardening technology through ion-chemical thermal treatment (ICTT) methods.

As a result of ion nitriding, a uniformly developed, non-brittle nitrided layer and a high-quality nitride zone with increased hardness are formed. This surface is reliably protected from corrosion and erosion wear, thereby extending the service life of the components.

The company "Ion Technologies" (Perm) performed surface hardening and anti-corrosion protection of "Grate" type filters using ion-chemical thermal treatment methods for LLC "Zavod "Khimapparat" (Perm).

ICTT significantly increased the hardness, strength, and service properties of products made from structural carbon steel 20 and 09G2S.

After ICTT, measurements of surface hardness of the hardened objects were conducted using the portable ultrasonic hardness tester TKM-459C.

As of today, ion-vacuum nitriding is the leading method of surface hardening of components, surpassing other types of coatings in its technical characteristics.
