TEST. Magnetic Particle Inspection of a Mining Dump Truck Wheel Disc

Customer. Representatives of the UCCN (Unified Center for Non-Destructive Testing) with their Customer.

Inspection Object. Mining dump truck wheel disc.

Task. Detection and evaluation of cracks or other defects on the surface of the wheel disc using the magnetic particle inspection (MPI) method. In case defects are detected, analyze the possibility of further use of the disc.

Preparation for the test. The disc was cleaned of dirt and paint before starting the work.

Testing. The work was carried out using the STREAM-20 magnetic particle flaw detector manufactured by NPP "Mashproject". The device performs magnetic particle testing of ferromagnetic materials according to GOST R 56512-2015.

Test stages:

  1. Application of the magnetic suspension to the cleaned control area surface of the wheel disc according to the MPI method.
  2. Magnetization. After setting up the STREAM-20 flaw detector, the control area was magnetized using current cables. Current cables with a pistol grip and a contact tip were used, which should be installed at the edges of the inspected area and pressed tightly against the surface of the product.
  3. Visual inspection of the examined area. During magnetization, the highest concentration of magnetic flux lines forms over the defect. Magnetized particles of the suspension will accumulate here, acquiring a specific structure. As the distance from the defective area (crack, discontinuity) increases, the particle density of the suspension decreases.
  4. Demagnetization of the product.
  5. Cleaning the surface from the magnetic suspension.

The MPI procedure itself is classic. There is no specific method for MPI of such discs yet, but the Customer would like to develop and implement one.

The STREAM-20 flaw detector was tested in the presence of the Customer.

Results. A problematic area was found on the surface of the dump truck's wheel disc, where cracks appear. Increasing the number and/or depth of the cracks could lead to the disc's collapse.
